Modern Materials Handling Features DCS-URBX Partnership on Robotic AS/RS Deployments

Modern Materials Handling magazine featured the partnership between Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) and URBX. The deal makes DCS the first systems integrator authorized to implement URBX’s robotic automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) solution. The technology serves goods-to-person, high-density, high-throughput fulfillment operations.
About the Technology
Mass Robotics, which incubated Amazon Robotics, iRobot, and Locus, originally developed the system. URBX launched the solution commercially in 2023, targeting omni-channel retailers.
The system stores totes vertically up to 125 feet high, across 75 levels in a double-deep configuration. Multiple free-roaming dual-robots access inventory randomly. This design lets the system fill orders up to eight times faster than competing equipment. It can fulfill 50-line orders in under three minutes.
What’s Next for the Partnership

Ferguson also highlighted how well URBX complements DATUM™, DCS’s own brand-independent warehouse execution system (WES). Together, the two technologies give customers a fully integrated, brand-agnostic solution. This matters as customers’ fulfillment operations grow more complex.
URBX CEO Lincoln Cavalieri echoed that enthusiasm. He said the partnership helps bring “automated, on-demand retail fulfillment” to more of DCS’s customers. Cavalieri added that URBX looks forward to continued collaboration as DCS tackles customers’ unique fulfillment challenges.
