CASE STUDY: Tour Superior Communications’ DATUM-Optimized Fulfillment Operations
Superior Communications, a North American distributor of mobile accessories, has relied on DCS for many years to help its distribution operations keep pace with rapid growth. Most recently, DCS deployed DATUM, its proprietary warehouse execution system (WES), at the automated facility.
DATUM enabled Superior to significantly increase order fulfillment efficiency, improve accuracy, and expand hardware functionality and operational visibility without replacing the current warehouse management system (WMS). Commissioning was completed over a five-week span while Superior’s three shifts continued to fill orders around the clock.
Take a tour of the operation in this video, guided by Brian Curran, Vice President of Software for DCS.
Streamlined Order Picking
The process begins with picking, where DATUM marries the order to a tote before sending it into the order loop. To prevent bottlenecks, DATUM carefully regulates the release of totes based on capacity limits. Curran explains how this prevents the picking area from becoming overwhelmed. Instead, this optimization maintains a steady flow of orders while prioritizing efficiency and meeting order cut times.
Real-time productivity dashboards from the warehouse execution system software—displayed on monitors throughout the facility—share vital operational metrics. These include conveyor health, scan rates, and workload projections. With such insights, managers can redistribute labor effectively, ensuring that resources are allocated where they are needed most.
Enhanced Replenishment Processes
DATUM also tracks inventory replenishment needs and directs operators to retrieve needed items and restock racks as needed. The warehouse execution system upgrade seamlessly integrates with Superior’s existing warehouse management system (WMS), automatically updating inventory status and maintaining accurate stock levels.
For high-volume, fast-moving products, a dedicated bulk pick area enables efficient pallet-based picking. This approach ensures rapid replenishment and a smooth supply chain, Curran explains.
Optimized Packing Efficiency
At packing stations, DATUM strategically manages all order totes. Curran details how the software keeps totes in circulation until every required tote is available, then consolidates them for packing. The WMS tracks the contents of each tote, allowing for real-time verification of order accuracy before final packing.
