Problem Identification

DCS’s projects typically fall into one of two categories: companies that know exactly where the operational bottleneck lies within their process and need a solution developed to address it, or operations that recognize the effects of a problem but haven’t been able to determine the root cause. For customers who need help identifying the problem, DCS’s Supply Chain Consulting team is available. Through operations assessments, process improvement recommendations, or distribution design services, they collect and analyze data about the business, its networks, operations, processes, systems, and assets. This due diligence process allows the cause of the problem to be identified.

Potential Solution Evaluation

Once the cause of the inefficiency has been identified, a variety of possible solutions are explored. Sometimes small tweaks to existing processes or systems may be all that are needed. More complex situations may require a more in-depth assessment to explore and consider potential solutions (new equipment, process or network modifications, expanded facility footprint, new facility location or structure) and build a business case for each.

Formal Solution Design

After the optimal solution has been determined, DCS maps out a formal design and implementation plan. Applications engineering is performed, equipment, systems and controls are designed, and an installation timeframe is mapped out. Also, during this part of the process, bids from contractors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are acquired and reviewed, and pricing and proposal options are formally presented to the customer. At the conclusion of this phase, both a functional specification document and budget are produced and approved.

Team Formation

Both DCS and the customer identify which personnel from each will have responsibility to execute and manage the project. Both groups meet, and the project formally kicks off. Communication protocols are established to ensure that regular conversations about progress, timelines, milestones, obstacles, alternative solutions, and other timely updates can occur.

Order Equipment

DCS evaluates lead times for equipment delivery to ensure that the required components arrive on schedule within the implementation timeline. Additionally, because DCS is brand agnostic, we do not have an exclusive relationship with a single material handling OEM. That allows us to specify the equipment based on a variety of factors- including lead time. Based on the determination of which supplier has the optimal solution that can be delivered on time, purchase orders are issued.

Installation

Throughout the installation process, DCS coordinates equipment deliveries as well as schedules sub-contractors and other support equipment. This helps to maintain the correct sequence of work to be completed to prevent delays. Additionally, in a retrofit of an existing operation, scheduling to accommodate day-to-day work occurring in the building is determined.
