DCS and KNAPP Partner to Strengthen Supply Chains with Intelligent Automation

In a wide-ranging conversation, Ferguson and James tackled a variety of topics. Below are the highlights.
On Today’s Challenges
Ferguson pointed to customers wanting data-driven, high-density, and flexible solutions delivered with speed and precision, with workforce availability and ergonomics also top of mind. James added that fluctuating order structures — large store replenishment orders alongside small e-commerce orders — make flexibility essential.
On Their Companies’ Approaches
Rather than offering off-the-shelf systems, DCS focuses on understanding each customer’s specific challenge before building a tailored solution. Ferguson noted that pairing DCS’s customer-facing expertise with KNAPP’s technology gives customers confidence that “they’ve found the right partner.”
How the DCS/KNAPP Partnership Works
Both leaders pointed to trust as the foundation. James described how DCS brought KNAPP into customer meetings early on, first as observers, which built a strong working relationship over time. Ferguson emphasized assuming good intent and treating each other with respect, especially under pressure. James highlighted openness and transparency as key to the partnership’s success.
A Lighter Moment
Asked which movie best captures the partnership, Ferguson chose Mission: Impossible. His reasoning? The frequency with which DCS helps customers solve problems they’ve never faced before. James went with Fast & Furious. He referenced the speed at which KNAPP has to deliver concepts and numbers to keep pace with DCS’s own deadlines.
The Proof Point: Graco
The partnership’s flagship project is a Minneapolis distribution center for Graco, the global fluid-handling systems manufacturer. The solution centers on KNAPP’s Evo Shuttle system with 44,000 storage locations, integrated with picking, packing, and shipping. Results include:
- Greater pick accuracy through automation.
- Higher throughput to support Graco’s growth.
- A modular design that can flex to new product types.
- More storage density in a smaller footprint.
- Resilience against demand spikes and staffing fluctuations.
Looking Ahead
Both Ferguson and James are optimistic, pointing to innovations like KNAPP’s AeroBot as a growth driver for future joint projects.
