Inside the Graco Project: How DCS and KNAPP’s Partnership Delivers Results

Graco-Case-Study

A new case study and video from KNAPP take a deeper look at how DCS’s integration partnership with KNAPP came to life on the ground for Graco — the Minneapolis-based manufacturer of fluid- and powder-handling systems. Working closely together, the two companies delivered Graco’s new distribution center in just 24 months.

Two Roles, One Solution

As explained in the video, DCS acted as systems integrator — designing, building, implementing, and supporting Graco’s overall solution. Meanwhile, KNAPP’s Partner & Products business unit supplied core technology as a sub-supplier. Knapp primarily provided its shuttle systems, pocket sorters, and sortation products for DCS to integrate.

Data-Driven Design

According to KNAPP’s team, DCS’s upfront data analysis on Graco’s storage needs, picking requirements, and throughput targets gave both companies a clear foundation. From there, DCS and KNAPP collaborated on a storage system built not just for today’s needs, but designed to scale as Graco grows.

The Technology

At the center of the solution is KNAPP’s Evo Shuttle system, featuring 44,000 storage locations across two aisles with 25 levels each. The shuttle feeds inventory into picking, packing, and shipping sorters. Six Pick-it-Easy Evo goods-to-person work stations round out the picking process, guided by ergonomic, intuitive interfaces.

Compared to competing bids, DCS and KNAPP’s combined proposal won out by offering more storage locations and higher throughput in a smaller footprint. The system is also built for future growth. It includes room to add another aisle (66,000 additional locations, 1,500 double cycles per hour) as Graco’s product line expands.

Behind-the-Scenes Collaboration

One highlight from the video: not everything went perfectly. As challenges came up mid-project, both teams took ownership together to work through them rather than pointing fingers. That’s something the KNAPP team called a defining part of the partnership’s success.

Looking Ahead

Both companies describe Graco as an especially innovative customer. Likewise, both are excited about what’s next as the DCS-KNAPP partnership continues to grow.
