Automated Mixed SKU Pallet Fulfillment Discussed by Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) at MODEX 2024

On-floor education session features real-world application successes in markets outside grocery.

Franklin, Tenn. – February 19, 2024 – In addition to its exhibit at MODEX 2024 in Booth B3819, material handling systems integrator Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) will present an on-floor education session. “Getting the Business Case Right in Automated Mixed SKU Pallet Fulfillment,” will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. in Theater H. The theater is located on the right-hand wall Hall B in Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center.

Presenting the topic are speakers Jeremy Davidson, DCS’ Vice President of Sales; and J.J. Phelan, DCS’ Principal Solutions Consultant. The duo noted that there is increasing interest across a variety of industries in automating the process of building pallets containing different — or mixed — stock keeping units (SKUs). This most frequently happens at the outbound end of a distribution operation.

“Generally speaking, it’s easy to automate building a pallet with either conventional palletizing automation or robotic palletizing with a multi-axis arm and end effector,” said Davidson. “But building a mixed pallet consisting of a variety of product dimensions, weights, shapes, and contents is much more challenging to automate.”

For that reason, building mixed SKU pallets has long been a labor intensive, manual process. It’s a task both physically demanding and associated with a high risk of ergonomic injury. However, with the distribution and logistics industry continuing to struggle to attract and retain a reliable, consistent workforce, applying automation to this workflow has significant appeal.

“Highly automated grocery distribution and fulfillment operations have been experiencing large scale success automating mixed SKU pallet building,” noted Phelan. “Now, other industries such as general merchandise retail see that it can be done. In this session, we’ll be sharing how this technology can be applied outside of grocery fulfillment.”

COMBINING BEST PRACTICES WITH NEXT GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES

Davidson and Phelan will share a variety of case study examples to demonstrate how combining best practices with innovative technologies can yield successful mixed SKU pallet building.

“The effective deployment of software, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), image capture, print-and-apply, pick-and-place, and other automated material handling equipment is generating unique solutions to tackle the challenge of assembling a stable, damage-free pallet of different products,” Davidson said.

“Often, the secret sauce is in how the middleware and software combine to examine details about the items, plan a successful and balanced pallet load, and direct the automation technologies to execute the palletizing process,” Phelan added.

MODEX attendees who are unable to attend the session can view the slides synced to an audio recording after the show concludes via modexshow.com. Alternately, both Davidson and Phelan will be in the DCS exhibit, Booth B3819, during the show. An appointment to meet with either (or both) of them can be scheduled by contacting Megan Taylor, DCS Marketing Manager, at megan@designedconveyor.com.
