DCS Partners with Superior Communications to Double Picking Rates
Superior Communications is a leading provider of wireless products. They are based in La Vergne, Tenn. The company operates a 130,000 square foot warehouse with over 200 employees that opened in July 2017. When the operation reached its maximum picking system capacity, leadership turned to DCS—a leading provider of custom material handling system integration—for help.
The Picking Challenge
Superior Communications needed to improve facility utilization and picking efficiency while decreasing the overall order fulfillment cycle time. DCS created and implemented a package handling system and picking solution designed to:
- Improve storage capabilities
- Optimize material flow
- Increase productivity
The Solution
DCS researched to understand the previous operation and create a system that met the operational requirements while providing excellent value. The redesign of the package handling system called for an additional 1,840 pallet positions for increased storage capacity. Further, a new zone routing system reduced travel for pickers. Finally, a new system specially routed specific picks to a value-added services (VAS) area for faster throughput.
The Results
At go-live, the enhancements DCS put in place at Superior’s facility doubled productivity on the first day. With the new solution, Superior was able to increase utilization of existing space for its picking and fulfillment operations. Moreover, with picking efficiency dramatically increased, operations managers were able to reallocate associates to higher-value tasks. Additionally, a carefully planned implementation of the package handling system resulted in zero impact to existing operations.
“The DCS project team did an outstanding job enabling our pick-to light solution. Based on deployment, we’ve realized a 2X increase of productivity while improving overall service levels to our customers.” – Mike Cost, Superior C.O.O.
