Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) to Showcase DATUM Warehouse Execution System (WES) at MODEX 2024

Brand-agnostic WES takes an open approach to data and integration, maximizing return-on-investment (ROI) and overall value.

Franklin, Tenn. – March 7, 2024 – Material handling systems integrator Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) will showcase its brand-independent, warehouse execution system (WES), DATUM, at MODEX 2024. The software can be experienced by show attendees in Booth B3819, Hall B of Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center, March 11-14, 2024.

Built from the ground up by DCS’ software team, DATUM is totally independent from original equipment manufacturers’ (OEM) software. Its creation was driven by the system integrator’s desire for scalability, availability, flexibility, and reliability features.

“DATUM is DCS’ answer to the shortcomings we’ve identified in other WES software across four decades of material handling system implementations,” said Matt Ferguson, President of DCS.

“As the system integrations that DCS provides to warehouses, distribution centers, and parcel handling operations continue to grow more complex, our team saw the need for a new breed of WES,” Ferguson continued. “Just as every solution DCS designs and delivers for its customers is brand independent, so too is DATUM.”

DATUM’S OPEN APPROACH TO DATA AND INTEGRATION ENHANCES ITS VALUE

When developing DATUM, DCS specifically chose to take an open approach to data and integration, explained Brian Curran, Vice President of Software at DCS.

“The point of deploying a WES is to synchronize and orchestrate a variety of different equipment, processes, workflows, and resources to optimize throughput,” he said. “The more open the WES’ architect chooses to be when designing the software, the less likely there are to be issues with compatibility and integration.”

Built from the ground up with modern platforms used by leading technology companies, DCS created DATUM WES to be able to integrate with any equipment from any original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

“DATUM is not available as a standalone product. Instead, it is offered to customers who partner with DCS for integrated system deployments. Utilizing DATUM helps them attain even greater value and return-on-investment (ROI) from their new system,” Curran noted.

Additionally, thanks to its open approach to data and integration, implementing DATUM is often the first step in helping an operation advance on its roadmap toward higher levels of automation and system intelligence, he added.

“That’s because — unlike proprietary, locked-down WES software — DATUM users can access the data it collects to facilitate performance analysis in the business intelligence (BI) solution of their choice,” explained Curran.

Likewise, DATUM’s open integration approach makes it highly compatible with different automated material handling systems, sensors, and controls from virtually every OEM. No expensive custom coding is required, he said.

“DATUM also easily interfaces with software such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and warehouse management systems (WMS) from major suppliers, as well as homegrown and legacy systems,” Curran said. “This open approach to data and integration truly delivers maximum value to DATUM users.”
