Designed Conveyor Systems Debuts New Multi-Agent Orchestration Features in DATUM™ WES at MODEX 2026

New functions coordinate a unified mix of people and automation to create intelligent flow and predictive throughput. Additionally, DCS will present an education session highlighting successful DATUM deployments at MEYN Americas and Journey’s that leverage multi-agent orchestration.
Franklin, Tenn. – February 9, 2026 – Material handling systems integrator Designed Conveyor Systems (DCS) will showcase new functionality in its proprietary DATUM warehouse execution system (WES) software at MODEX, April 13-16, 2026. The exhibit, in Booth 15511 in Hall B of the Georgia World Congress Center, will highlight DATUM’s multi-agent orchestration capabilities.
“As fulfillment operations scale automation with faster shuttles, autonomous robots, and higher-density storage, many facilities still struggle to achieve consistent throughput,” explained Justin Ray, Principal, Software, DCS. “Equipment is no longer the biggest constraint we see in operations today. Instead, it’s flow. Static execution rules, wave-based releases, and siloed control systems often create congestion, starvation, and variability that limit performance even in highly automated environments.”
At MODEX, DCS will demonstrate how the new multi-agent orchestration (MAO) features integrated into DATUM create a unified mix of people and automation. This transforms different systems and workflows into a coordinated, intelligent operation capable of delivering predictive throughput.
“Flow intelligence fundamentally changes how work moves through a fulfillment operation,” Ray continued. “Instead of reacting to bottlenecks after throughput degrades, multi-agent orchestration enables the system to anticipate constraints and continuously rebalance work across people and automation in real time.”
FROM LOCAL DECISIONS TO SYSTEM-WIDE MULTI-AGENT ORCHESTRATION
Traditional warehouse control strategies optimize locally—conveyors release cartons when they can, picking zones work independent queues, and labor reacts to visible congestion. While logical in isolation, these decisions often fail to coordinate flow across the entire operation.
DATUM WES with multi-agent orchestration replaces fragmented execution with coordinated control. Specialized agents represent flow zones, resources, buffers, and operational objectives. Working collaboratively, they dynamically determine:
- When and where work should be released.
- How priorities should shift as conditions change.
- Which resources should be assigned or reassigned to maintain balanced workflows.
Multi-agent orchestration shifts execution from asset utilization to flow optimization. It ensures work moves through the operation at the rate required to meet throughput, service-level, and peak-volume goals.
PREDICTIVE INSIGHT, UNIFIED RESOURCES, AND MEASURABLE RESULTS IN A WAREHOUSE EXECUTION SYSTEM
Flow intelligence combines continuous monitoring, predictive modeling, and historical analysis to give operations visibility into both current performance and future risk. By comparing modeled versus actual performance across all flow zones, DATUM predicts completion times, required rates, and resource needs to protect throughput before service levels are impacted.
“Via its MAO capabilities, DATUM coordinates a unified mix of people, conveyors, robots, and automation under a single execution model,” noted Ray. “Humans and machines are no longer managed as separate systems, but as a coordinated resource network aligned around shared operational objectives.”
DCS PRESENT ON-FLOOR EDUCATION SESSIONS
In addition to its MODEX display, DCS will present an on-floor education session: “Multi-Agent Orchestration: The New Standard in Fulfillment.” Joining Ray for the session are Carl Brewer, VP of Distribution at retailer Journey’s, and Michael Otterbach, VP of Parts Operations at MEYN Americas. Both companies recently completed full-scale system design and integration projects led by DCS that incorporated DATUM WES.
The pair will discuss how the MAO features in DATUM enable real-time collaboration between autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), fixed automation, labor, and software. They will also detail how these features are helping their operations balance workflows, dynamically respond to disruptions, and extend the lifespan of their existing warehouse management system (WMS) software.
The seminar will occur on Wednesday, April 15 from 2:15 – 3:00 p.m. in Theater F, located on the right-hand wall in Hall B. It is free for registered attendees of MODEX. Those who are unable to join the session can view the slides synced to an audio recording after the show concludes via modexshow.com.
