DCS’s Brian Curran on Predictive AI and the Cloud: Takeaways from MHI Solutions

In a recent MHI Solutions feature, “The Smart Warehouse: Top Automation Trends Reshaping Logistics in 2026,” Brian Curran, VP of Software at DCS (pictured at right), weighed in on two of the year’s biggest shifts: predictive AI and cloud-based warehouse systems.
Predictive AI Isn’t Just Advisory Anymore
Curran made the case that predictive analytics has moved well past the dashboard. As he put it, predictive models aren’t just advisory. Now, they can actively control material flow, direct robotic fleets, and optimize task sequencing in real time.
He pointed to DCS’s own DATUM warehouse execution system (WES) as a working example. In DATUM, AI-driven algorithms anticipate inventory needs and position stock ahead of demand. This cuts down on unnecessary shuffling, especially for just-in-time orders.
But Curran was quick to note that the technology alone isn’t the differentiator. Getting it right takes a deliberate piloting period, and the right partners to shorten the ramp-up and focus effort where it counts.
Cloud WMS: From “Nice to Have” to Competitive Necessity
On the cloud side, Curran sees adoption accelerating. This, he says, is driven by the cost of maintaining on-premises servers and the pull toward centralized visibility and business intelligence.
For larger, multi-site operations especially, he sees cloud-based WMS as the more natural fit. The reason is how it centralizes management across locations that would otherwise operate in silos.
He was candid about the hesitation some operators still feel. There’s a “protective culture” around keeping individual facilities running independently, and latency is almost always the first question that comes up in those conversations.
Still, for Curran, the payoff is clear: visibility. Centralizing data in the cloud is what unlocks the next layer of value. This ranges from business intelligence tools to the kind of analytics that actually drive innovation—rather than just reporting on what already happened.

Whether it’s AI models directing a robotic fleet or a WMS coordinating dozens of sites, Curran’s comments point to the same underlying shift. In 2026, warehouse technology is moving from reactive to anticipatory.
