DCS Optimizes KaVo Kerr Dental Distribution Center

KaVo Kerr, a leading global dental equipment manufacturer, specializes in dental pastes, gels, and supplies. With multiple manufacturing plants and distribution centers across North America, the company experienced significant growth — both organic and through acquisitions. This prompted a need to optimize its distribution network for improved efficiency and customer service.
Project Background
KaVo Kerr operated five distribution centers serving U.S. and international markets. To boost productivity, enhance order fulfillment, and reduce costs, the company decided to consolidate these into a single, advanced facility near Pomona, Calif. The company engaged DCS to provide supply chain engineering expertise for designing an efficient, scalable distribution center.
Project Objectives
- Consolidation: Merge five distribution centers into one optimized facility.
- Scalability: Accommodate 3% annual organic growth and future acquisitions.
- LEAN Design: Enhance productivity, accuracy, and cost efficiency in picking operations.
- Customer Service: Improve order accuracy, reduce cycle times, and elevate delivery quality.
- Operator Productivity: Minimize dwell time, reduce non-value-added handling, and improve ergonomics.
Distribution Center Design
DCS delivered a comprehensive design framework, including:
- Conceptual facility layout with phased expansion plans.
- Material handling equipment recommendations.
- Productivity and staffing projections.
- Space requirements and design parameters.
- Evaluation of alternative solutions with budgetary pricing.
- Implementation roadmap.
Distribution Center Slotting
The slotting strategy optimized inventory placement and workflows:
- SKU stratification by order volume, frequency, and movement (ABC classification).
- Efficient SKU location assignments and grouping by affinity.
- Pick sequencing in Oracle to reduce travel time and congestion.
- Inventory integration plan for seamless transfer to the new facility.
Key Deliverables
Design: Layouts, equipment specifications, staffing models, cost analyses, implementation plan, and operational move support.
Slotting: Optimized SKU placements, fulfillment zone assignments, Oracle configuration, inventory loading plan, and a future slotting strategy for KaVo Kerr’s Amersfoort operation.
Results & Impact
The collaboration with DCS enabled KaVo Kerr to consolidate operations. As a result, the company reduced logistics costs, enhanced order accuracy and fulfillment speed, and improved inventory management and operator efficiency. This further established a scalable infrastructure for future growth.
DCS was selected for this critical project due to proven expertise in supply chain engineering, particularly in designing LEAN distribution systems for complex, high-growth industries. Their track record of delivering data-driven, scalable solutions — coupled with their ability to integrate advanced technologies like Oracle into operational workflows — made them the ideal partner to ensure KaVo Kerr’s new facility met both current demands and long-term strategic goals.
This consolidation positioned KaVo Kerr for sustained operational excellence and high customer service standards, reinforcing their competitive edge in the dental equipment market.
